Jameos del Agua is a unique natural phenomenon that can be found in the north of Lanzarote, one of the islands comprising the Canary archipelago. Belonging to the same volcanic formation as Cuevas Los Verdes, these are the series of caverns turned into the tourist centre and attraction.
Now, it consists not only of the volcanic caves but also an auditorium, lounge zone, gardens, research station and museum, restaurant and a lake. Formed during the eruptions of Corona Volcano a few thousand years ago back in Ice Age, lava tubes are going even underwater, and that's what is interesting about Jameos del Agua. In the language of indigenous people, "jameos" is the cave in which the roof has broken down and fell inside. "Del Agua", in turn, refers to yet another phenomenon - the lake formed by ocean waters, infiltrating the cave and creating a very specific and vulnerable environment.
The architectural decisions are what make the assembly of Jameos del Agua so unique and attractive for tourists. During the 1960s, the talented architect César Manrique, born in Lanzarote, was responsible for the refreshment and creation of the attraction. Here, his creative imagination had the space to unfold in the process of working on his first serious project. Combining different natural textures with artificial ones, he achieved the sophisticated and vibrantly colored result which allures visitors with a relaxed and magical atmosphere.
One of the natural peculiarities of Jameos del Agua is it is being connected to the world's longest volcanic underwater tunnel. It is called Túnel de la Atlántida and has its own flora nad fauna. Speaking about specific fauna - the main cavern with a lake inside also can boast being home to the rare species. Its residents are famous albino crabs of Lanzarote, they even got their own monument!
These crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha) are very small, not even reaching the size of 1 cm, also extremely sensitive to environmental changes. Because of that, the tourists are strictly forbidden to throw coins into the lake. In another cave of the geological formation, Jameo Grande, you can see the turquoise-blue lake, encompassed by white concrete and dominated by the 100-year-old palm, growing nearby.
At the very end, the auditorium was created due to the impeccable acoustic features of the cave. Here, all kinds of concerts are regularly held. Also, if you want to educate yourself on the place you're visiting, head for the Casa de Los Volcanes, a scientific research station together with the museum, dedicated to the subject of vulcanology and geology. So, let yourself dive into the cozy and magical atmosphere of Jameos del Agua and admire the perfect blend of natural and artificial beauty, manifested before your eyes!
