Beautiful Imja Lake was created when the water started collecting at the base of Imja Glacier in the 1950s. A recent study in 2009 has described it as one the fastest growing lake in the Himalaya region. It is barricaded by the terminal moraine and threatens the communities living down the lake with the inundation of their belongings. Due to this, it is called one of the most dangerous lake in the Himalaya region.
The altitude of Imja Lake is exceptionally high, 5010 m above the sea level. Catchment areas of it comprise of northeastern parts of Dudh Kosi basin. Alike communities, the Imja Lake is also down the Imja glacier whose melted water stores here. Another Lhotse Shar Glacier is also in south-west whereas the Imja is in the northwest. Both the glaciers conjoin and flow towards the west beneath the trekking path of Imja Tse.
The first mapping of Imja Lake was made by the satellite images in the form of ponds. The estimated total area of the ponds was 0.03 Km2. However, with continuous melting of the glaciers, ponds joined together and made a complete lake of fresh and transparent water. As for now, the overall size and water potential of the Imja Lake can be deduced from this fact that in 2016, the Nepalese Army had drained almost 4 million cubic meters of water from it.
Many travelers rounds the year comes here to take pictures of mouthwatering view as well as to enjoy the serenity of this place. Waves of freshwater moving with the push of air bring a soothing sound to the ears of visitors. This makes Imja Lake an attractive place to enjoy the beauty of nature.
