It is a 21-Kilometer-long mountain Hai Van Pass across the National Route in Vietnam. Hai Van Pass shares a border with the East Sea of Vietnam and Thua Thien-Hue Province. The rise of mists from the nearby sea reduces the visibility, so the pass was named such due to that. As far as the history of Pass is concerned, it was a division b/w the Kingdom of Dai Viet and Champa.
Hai Van Pass also acted as a boundary between southern and northern Vietnam. For instance, the weather might be wet on the northern side while it would be warm and dry as you would cross into the southern zone. Zig zag road on the long pass has been a challenge for the commuters traveling between the cities of Da Nang and Hue. Tunnel named Hai Van was constructed which has greatly improved the traffic flow in the area. Rail’s most serious accidents and one air crash happened over time.
Hai Van Pass is mainly known for its beauty, due to which BBC Motoring Program host Jeremy Clarkson featured it in his program Top Gear in 2008. The pass was shown as a deserted ribbon of perfection in his show and ride on it was named as the world’s best coast ride. This pass has played a vital role for the armies traveling from north to south region. A Chinese General Ma Yuan crossed into the southern border and established the Han empire. He installed columns of bronze, probably at the Hai Van. He stationed some Chinese military personnel to defend the frontier.
Two routes cross the Hai Van Pass. One is North-South Railway and the other National Route. The road reaches up to a height of 496 m at some points and then it goes even to the elevation of 1,172 m as you move further into the south. Pass used to be famous for the greater number of accidents and deaths. Mainly the tourists, motorbikes and the oil tankers move on the pass.
As you will sit in the train, do not forget to observe the majestic scenes of the Hai Van Pass that are offered from the windows of train cabins.
