Ha Long Bay has been acknowledged as UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994 and remained top tourist attraction for the locals as well as foreigners. It spans over an area of 434 km2 and consists of 755 islets and islands. The tourist site lies in Hai Phong City and Quang Ninh Province at 150 km away from Hanoi.
Very old karst topography is a distinctive quality of Ha Long Bay Archipelago, mostly in wet conditions. Halong Bay’s Island is coupled with the dotted wind. It presents a vision of the utmost beauty. The spectacular sea view scenery stuns the mighty and stubborn into humility.
In the Vietnamese language, Ha Long stand for ‘descending dragon’. Dragons have a very significant role in Vietnamese culture and they are associated with almost all the things when it comes to making stories. An old man narrated that once a creature like a dragon descended from heaven to protect the Viet people from crusaders. Dragon sprayed fire and emeralds in defense of the locals. Later on, the dragon and her children preferred to stay on earth. The jewels formed the limestone formations, which over the passage of time transformed into towers, green islands and water enjoyed by the tourists.
Bai Tu Long, located in premises of the Ha Long is called children of the dragon. Overall the Ha Long Bay is very charming and fanciful. The exciting thing about the Karst towers in Ha Long Bay is that it not only attracts the geologists but painters, artists, scientists and students of history.
Access to the Ha Long Bay is easy as one can reach by taxi, hydrofoil, bus, and motorbikes. Direct transfer from the Airport can also be availed. To cut the journey short, ride by the helicopter or seaplane can also be helpful.
It is up to you, but many travelers take an overnight boat tour of Ha Long Bay. One ethereal sunrise and sunset is experienced this way. Activities likely to be performed there include kayaking, visiting caves and swimming.
Best time of the year to visit Ha Long Bay is March to May or September to November. It is considered a good time as during the rest of the year, the weather remains extreme.
