Doc Mieu Bases are the nearest American bases to DMZ. Just as you will go a little up from the Town of Dong Hoa, you would reach the bases. A rusted Sherman tank is still in place at the base which was during wartime the busiest base. Tourists come to this place for a short visit.
Basically French established the Doc Mieu Base in 1947 latching women called Doc. Following this, the US named it the impregnable fortress during the wartime. Bases were arranged and connected from coast to Gio Hai Ben, Con Tien and Doc to prevent any attack from the northern armies. US army built a fencing facility also with barbed wires and overlapping layers to prevent any untoward situation. Strong bumper lights were installed along the periphery to foil any attack of the aggressors. The ghost border was made and manned with the soldiers.
Records show that the Doc Mieu Base was the most significant defense post in Mc Namara. Bunker mobile system, hangars, and ground artillery fire mechanism was established along the northern bank of Ben Hai River. Even though it was a modern base, however, most of the electronic fence has been dismantled.
As of today, Con Tien and Doc have become an important and attractive tourist destination. Monument of the victory can be seen standing atop over the hills. The most prominent thing you would see at the Doc Mieu Base is an old tank and a sign. Hence if you planning to go to the Demilitarized zone in Vietnam, pay a short visit positively to the Doc Mieu Base.
