Cham Museum has roots dating back to 192 A.D when the local Cham Vietnamese people were living in traditional Indian style and following the local culture as well as language. Cham Museum is entirely dedicated to that era and the existence of Champa started during those times in coastal areas of Vietnam. Museum has the largest exhibition of Cham artifacts. Around 300 terracotta and stone works are on display dating back to the 7th to 15th centuries.
The majority of the exhibits of the Cham Museum are considered masterpieces of their relevant field and region. There are almost ten separate exhibition rooms. Major sections of the exhibit include pediment, icon, pedestal, and fragment.
As you would come out of the museum after a detailed visit of the exhibits, you can’t remain without appreciating the beauty of the museum’s building. The building is surrounded by the leaves, flowers, and turrets. The building design was prepared by the French architect Auclair and Delaval. Kingdom of Champa who ruled Vietnam from 192 A.D to mid-seventeenth century left a legacy of Hindu dominated architecture and Cham motif. Examples of the architecture and motif can be located in Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Quang Nam, and Binh Thuan.
The majority of the artwork that is on display belongs to the era prior to the early nineteenth century. Some of the pieces has imprint of Buddhism which includes some deities and altars. Almost eight centuries the history of Buddhism is reflected in the artwork. Some of the artifacts belong to Champa Golden age.
In short, Cham Museum is only in the world dedicated to the Champa era and it was founded by colonial French rulers in 1915. It is expanded twice since its founding in the 1920s and then in the 1930s. Cham Museum has expanded again in 2002, a two-story building was constructed. The new building has not only space for display but storage and library also. Cham Museum was being administered by the Da Nang Museums authority till 2007 but later on, it was affiliated with the city Department of Culture, Tourism, and Sport.
As of now, the Cham Museum is a very popular tourist destination and remained full of hundreds of visitors all over the year.
