But Thap Pagoda is an ancient temple in Northern Vietnam. It is also known as Ninh Phuc Tu. Despite many natural and social upheavals and calamities, this place is still intact today and is beautifully preserved. Hanoi is just at a distance of 30 km from here while the distance to Dau Pagoda is 3 Km.
Location of temple at Duong River makes it perfect for the tourists. But Thap Pagoda was actually constructed in XIII century under the supervision of Tran Thanh Tong dynasty. The temple is overhauled and renovated multiple times since its construction. Biggest renovation was made at the beginning of the XVII century, during the Le-Tinh Period. Abbot of Pagoda was the monk of Chuyet Chuyet and it was whose disciple Minh Hanh who renovated the whole of the pagoda and contributed generously in terms of money. The land was allocated by Queen Dieu Vien, Princess Le Thi Ngoc Duyen and Princess Trinh Thap Ngoc co. Statues of all of them are still anchored in the But Thap Pagoda and revered by the locals. Restoration work was carried out by the experts who devoted their full energies to make this place worth respecting. It took almost three years in renovating the Pagoda. After overhauling, name of the pagoda was kept Ninh Phuc Tu.
While talking about ancient statues of But Thap Pagoda, a treasure called Buddha Statue Thien Thu Thien should be mentioned at least. Statue is distinctive of its own kind and has 46 big arms, 11 heads, and 954 small arms. It is considered a masterpiece of Budha Statues. Height of the statue is 3.7 m, width is 2.1 m and it is placed on a lotus. Overall the temple is unique, tall and majestic.
A stone tower named Bao Nghiem has added tremendous value to the beauty of pagoda. Construction of the tower is like a giant pen, reaching straight down to the sky. Height of tower is 13.05 m, having five floors built and decorated in a unique pattern.
But Thap Pagoda festival is a traditional and famous event held in that area on 23rd and 24th March. A range of traditional cultural activities held from folk dancing to ritual events. Many local and foreign visitors align their itinerary with the schedule of this event. Due to the utmost value, history, and architecture, But Thap Pagoda was recognized and ranked as a cultural-historical monument on April 28, 1962.
