The Bergen Railway, or the Bergen Line, or the Bergensbanen in Norwegian, is the railway that most people call the most fabulous road in the world. It connects Bergen, Norwegian town on the western coast of the country, famous for its fjords, and the capital Oslo. Meanwhile, it takes you on the wondrous journey through the wild, severe yet hauntingly beautiful nordic nature which is impossible to forget.
The Bergen Line stretches across the country as far as approximately 500 kilometers (or about 310 miles) and the whole trip lasts seven hours. Tourists can travel from Oslo to Bergen or vice versa during any season of the year since a few trains go there daily from both cities. Considering the territory the trains pass through, it is easy to become astounded not only by the sheer beauty but also by the mere fact it exists.
The railroad was constructed during the period between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Its first version was the Vossebanen, opened in 1883 and joining together Bergen and the town Voss. Twenty-six years later, the complete Bergensbanen launched its first train to Oslo.
The creation of this railway was tough due to the snowstorms, barely populated terrains, inhuman temperatures and lack of supplies. In addition, people had to cut through the extremely solid rock named gneiss, which, however, resulted in carving of 182 tunnels, including Ulriken Tunnel more than 7 kilometers long and made out of dark stone.
The highlights of the Bergen Railway journey are multiple miraculous fjords of Bergen like Dramsfjord, picturesque hills and valleys, the biggest plateau on Europe called Hardangervidda, farmlands, forests, lakes, waterfalls, and mountains where snow settles over the course of the year. The highest level where the train station can be found is 1222 meters, and it is higher than Ben-Nevis. There huddles the Finse station, from which the train is ready to pierce through the snow and winters of the north and climb even higher - at the point of 1237 meters, to desolated cold areas. The drastic climate change is waiting for you in Myrdal, the mountain station with mild and generally much less intimidating weather. From Myrdal, you can choose to switch the trains and go to the village Flåm by The Flåm Railway.
All in all, the Bergen Line is truly the miracle built by humans which offers the almost surreal experience of seeing the variety of Norwegian landscapes from glaciers to marvelous fjords, while traveling in a comfortable train equipped with all facilities.
