Ben Hai River played a very vital part in dividing the country into Northern and Southern Zone as per the Geneva Accords of 1954. The river is situated in central Vietnam and lies along the 17th parallel. The specified demilitarized zone comprised of five kilometers from each side of the river. The total length of the river is approximately 100 kilometers.
Ben Hai River basically originates from the Annamite Mountains alongside the border area of Laos and it flows straight into the south China sea. It’s mouth opens in the sea at the Cua Tung. As the river passes through the mountains, the locals call it Rao Thanh. Direction of its flow is from west to east across the 17th parallel. At its widest point, the river is approximately 200 meters wide which is quite big by any standard.
French colonists built a steel bridge in 1950 which is named then as Peace Bridge. Many historic stories are attached to the bridge. One side of it was painted red while the southern side was painted yellow right after the partition. However, the American bombardment damaged it during the great Vietnam war in year 1967. A new bridge was constructed after the peace deal struck between the warring factions. As far as tourism is concerned, the Ben Hai River offers natural spectacles to enjoy for any common visitor. A monument is constructed on the northern side of the river. Flag is also hosted over the monument. Later on, watchtowers and loudspeakers were also installed to let the other side know about any propaganda by the warring forces. A house can also be located which was built as a local office by the UN Observation commission to work during 1954-1965. Then a museum can be spotted on the roadside, contains images and remains of the war than how it was fought in this area.
If you are in Vietnam and looking for a place which has a rich history and natural beauty also, then Ben Hai River is the best option.
