Azeitão is the district of Setúbal municipality and lies within the metropolitan territory of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. Villages huddle at the foot of the mountains and attract a lot of visitors who come from Lisbon to the city of Palmela and its neighborhoods. It has formed in the result of merging two areas of São Lourenço and São Simão.

Nowadays, its most prominent feature is the fact that Azeitão consists mainly of many different villages. Most of them have "de Azeitão" in their titles, which is the remainder of the olive groves that grew in these terrains during the Arab period. One of the most famous villages for tourists is Vila Nogueira de Azeitão and Vila Fresca de Azeitão. Both of them, as well as other villages, contain a lot of sights and important landmarks. First of all, since Azeitão is also very popular for its wines, cheese, pastry, and pies, we suggest visiting José Maria da Fonseca wine estate. It is situated in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, namely right on the main road leading through the town.

The headquarters was built back in 1834 and now are most famed for the wine sorts: Moscatel de Setúbal and Periquita. The former was essentially introduced by da Fonseca company, the latter is the oldest Portuguese fine wine. Here, tours are held regularly, during which you are able to get educated on the history of wine production and also be directly shown each of its stages. You can even take a brief look at the wine cellars, the real sanctuary of some wines that are sometimes more than 200 years old! For other delicacies like cheese, for example, head for Mercado do Azeitão, the market in the center of Vila Nogueira! There you can purchase two main types of cheese, queijo fresco or queijo de Azeitão, all handmade and only differing in texture and production.

As for architecture, Azeitão can boast such a beautiful building as Quinta da Bacalhôa L-shaped mansion which dates back to the fifteenth century and has the oldest preservation of azulejo on the panel in the tower Casa do Fresco. Also, for more traditional Portuguese azulejo technique, visit the Church of São Lourenço de Almancil that was erected in the 18th century. It has walls fully covered by azulejo tiles representing the plots of life of São Lourenço that were produced in 1730. So, if you are into art, good food and wine, don't think twice - Azeitão something you must visit if you happen to be in Lisbon!
