Atlantida Tunnel, which is known as Túnel de la Atlántida in Spanish or by another English name of Tunnel of Atlantis, is considered to be the longest lava tube in the world. The main feature of the tunnel is that it's fully immersed in the water, creating a truly unique passway 1,500 kilometres long and about 80 kilometres deep.
The underwater tube is the part of the bigger mainland magma one which is called Cueva de Los Verdes (the Green Caves) and stretches as far as 7 kilometres on the total. The tunnel occurred as a result of the eruption of the volcano Monte Corona about three or five thousand years ago. Therefore, it takes its beginnings at the volcano vent and extends over the land until it plunges into the ocean. During the eruption, while the outer layers of lava started to harden, the core undercurrent was still pouring hot through the naturally formed tube and evaporating the water on its way under its surface.
Now only transparent ocean torrents fill the tunnel that earned its poetic name owing to the numerous mysteries and legends enclosing the Canary islands as being the only remnants of ancient Atlantida which sunk to the ocean floor. Atlantida tunnel preserves relict species of animals that are most likely nowhere to find except here, e.g. blind albino cave crab. This fact turns the tube into a subject of high interest for scientists.
Average tourists have the chance to see Atlantida tunnel mainly from the outside as a part of the tour through Cueva de Los Verdes. There, you have the chance to see not only the magma caverns, which for a long time served as a shelter for native citizens during pirate invasions but also Jameos del Agua. It is a lagoon, marking the start of Atlantida tunnel and embodying the combination of natural wonder and human talent of an architect Cesar Manrique. He managed to create a lounge zone near Jameos del Agua along with bar, concert hall and vulcanology museum.
Visitors can attend Cueva de Los Verdes, as well as Jameos del Agua from 10 AM to 18:30 PM any day. The prices may vary according to the specific tour. In a nutshell, Atlantida tunnel is a unique magma tube which is surrounded by mysteries and allures thousands of travellers each year.
