Hiking & Nature on the Trails of Central Dalmatia

Description

Hiking & Nature on the Trails of Central Dalmatia

Omis is a small Central Dalmatian town and harbor 25 km away from Split, situated in the mouth of the Cetina river, with beautiful beaches surrounded by massive gorges.

Without any doubt, the Cetina River is one of the most beautiful places in Croatia for freshwater kayaking, white water rafting, and many more activities. It is situated in a luscious region surrounded by quaint little villages, it is the most water-rich river in Dalmatia and it's very important, both historically and archaeologically.

The inhabitants of medieval Omis were pirates who for almost two centuries ruled the seas from Omis to Dubrovnik, and their ships were a symbol of retaliation, courage, and strength. Today barren cliffs of the Mosor Mountain and the Dinara of Omis Mountain watch over the town and the spirit of past times can still be felt everywhere.

This beautiful nature of one of the most diverse parts of Croatia will surely take your breath away.

Itinerary

  1. Visited Places:

Welcome to the second-largest city of Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia.

Depending on the time of your arrival, we will take you to Split city center for a guided tour. This vibrant city is well known for its magnificent history and an abundance of landmarks, exquisite food, and wine, the beauty of natural and cultural heritage, and a pleasant climate year-round. After the tour, your driver will take you to your accommodation in Omiš.

Get settled in and then go for a stroll around the neighborhood. Camping Galeb is situated on the entrance to the picturesque town of Omiš, along the camp’s 300-meter long beach at the mouth of the Cetina river. Mobile homes are energy efficient and modern equipped, and only a ten minutes walking distance from Omiš center. Have dinner in one of the restaurants in the town center or in the camp’s restaurant and enjoy local specialties.

Day 2: Poljica mountain range (Camping Galeb – Čažin Dolac – Naklice – Camping Galeb)

You will leave your mobile homes at 8 am and start with the ascent towards Čažin Dolac, a picturesque hamlet in the middle of Tugare, in the former Republic of Poljica. It is located on a hillock in the northern part of Perun Hill. The village is dominated by old stone houses and buildings like stone stables ("pojate") and closed smoke kitchens (“komini”). In the middle of the village, there is a renovated church dedicated to the patron saint Saint Francis. On your way back to the hotel you will visit Naklice, a small village of extremely interesting history and natural beauty. It also belongs to Poljica and it stands in this area, at an altitude of 235 m a.s.l. since the Cretan War, mid-17th century. Until then, the village was located above the village of Priko in Omiš, and then because of the destruction of the buildings and scamper of the population, after the passing of the European armies towards the island of Crete, people moved to today's area, around the already built church of their patron St. Anthony (Ante). Here you will take a break and taste the most famous specialty of the region – Soparnik, a very simple dish made from common ingredients from the region. The last stage of your route is shorter and soon you will be back at the camp.

The highest summit, Veliki Kabal, is 1339  meters high. The mountain lodge Umberto Girometta can be reached in less than one hour of climbing from Sitno Gornje wherefrom a number of signposts indicate the direction to other interesting peaks and destinations. You will also have the opportunity to swim in the clear and tranquil Cetina river as it passes through its high canyon. Your final destination for this hiking tour will be Radman mills, an oasis of peace where you can enjoy the freshness of the river and the pleasant shade of ancient trees. Radman family recognized the location of the mills as an ideal place for vacation in the 19th century, so they redecorated the old mill into a country-estate for their family. You will start your day early and leave the camp at 07:30 am to head towards Biokovo, the largest and highest mountain in Dalmatia. It rises vertically from the Adriatic Coast to a height of 1762 m. Because of its geographical position, Biokovo is a mountain that has continental as well as a Mediterranean climate, so various plant species of both worlds meet and live next to each other. There are over thirty marked trails leading up the mountain on the seaward side and eight on the landward side. Your hiking route will start from Gornja Brela, one of the ancient villages on the foothills of the magnificent rocky mountain.
